Jan 12, 2022

RICHMOND, Va. – As the 2022 Virginia General Assembly session kicks off its 60-day legislative session, the Virginia National Guard Association outlined a public policy agenda focused on strengthening the benefits that Virginia National Guard’s Soldiers and Airmen receive.

Among the priorities, the VNGA will advocate for the passage of:

House Bill No. 231, presented by Del. Bobby Orrock (R) of the 54th District, which increases the total number of leave days for military service from 15 to 21 days.

House Bill No. 233, presented by Del. Bobby Orrock (R) of the 54th District, which increases the taxable income subtraction from $3,000 to $5,000 and moves the grade cap from O-3 to O-6.  This is a listed priority of the of Veterans Services’ Joint Leadership Council.

House Bill No. 487, presented by Del. Dan Helmer (D) of the 40th District, which removes State Parks entrance fees for currently serving members of the Virginia National Guard. This is a listed priority of the of Veterans Services’ Joint Leadership Council.

“The lingering pandemic, recent severe weather and near-constant global turmoil continually demonstrates the critical role that the Virginia National Guard plays in the wellbeing of the communities we serve,” said Andrew J. Czaplicki, VNGA president. “The past year has tested and strained our force unlike ever before. Our policy priorities for this year’s General Assembly help ensure the financial stability and recognition that Soldiers and Airmen need to continue meeting Virginia’s needs—through this pandemic and beyond.”

Lawmakers begin in-person meeting today and will be in session for the next 60 days with the goals of drafting a two-year state budget and addressing issues from across the state.

“We rely heavily on grassroots input from the general population, not just currently serving members of the Virginia National Guard,” explained Czaplicki. “Our Soldiers and Airmen serve our communities, which means that everyone living in Virginia should advocate for favorable policies and laws that provide for and protect our Virginia National Guard.”
